Labels: Cockwood, Thurs 9th October 2008 Open Mic at The Anchor Inn
Ok, back to the radio interview, we also kind of got thrown in at the deep end. The guys said that we had 4 minutes to write a chorus or verse of a song to do with a random song title that a listener texts in, and then we have to play it live on air. And you can’t imagine what they chose? It was a nightmare. The song title was ‘‘Put a chicken in the oven’’...It was really funny but I couldn’t believe it and my mind just seemed to empty itself of lyrics. Thank goodness for Katie’s quick thinking and lyrical content else I’d a been like a chicken in the oven...stuffed...he,he! :) so we managed to come up with a verse and played it. I wasn’t sure if we should be proud or maybe find a big hole to bury selves in. Probably the latter but hey we all had a laugh and that’s what it’s all about.

I’ve been to a few open mic nights at The Hook & Parrot in Seaton lately. It’s been really good to see other musicians play again and be inspired. I’ve been playing a few songs on my guitar and Tony’s been playing a couple for me too which is great because I can then focus on the vocals more instead of, ’oh no which chord comes next...’ :) Ahh it’s all good stuff.

Another really busy weekend. Belmont Park-Exeter , The Castle pub-Bradninch Festival, and finally Mad Hatters Party-Crediton
Katie & me were booked to play at Bradninch festival. I was then playing a party gig with Ed in the evening.
Katie rang me the day before asking if I wanted to do a last minute gig in Belmont Park in Exeter before we go to Bradninch Festival. I thought yea, we can do it when we B&Q it! :)
GIG NUMBER ONE We arrived at Belmont Park, Exeter and there were problems with the genni’ so we had no electric for a bit. I was conscious that time was wafting away as we didn‘t have long before we had to shoot off to the next gig. When we got going, after about 2 songs the heavens opened and it hailed...big time. This wasn’t any ordinary hail. It was huge, massive, humongous hail. I’ve never seen hail that big before in my life. I would compare the size to a jaffa cake but realistically they were more the size of smarties or M & M’s. honestly :) Everyone was running for cover before they got knocked out. :0 Most people ran in the open sided tent that we were playing in. It was quite a bizarre experience. Everyone was stood behind us. I thought I’d try and be funny and said, if your stood there that means you have to sing...Their faces looked worried and not many did... It was fun though. Never had that happen before. It was also the first time that my niece & nephew, Leah & Malikai, 6 and 2years old have ever seen me sing live. I was really honoured they were there. My dear Mum bought them down with Chloe and I felt all mushy inside...ahhhh shucks!!
GIG NUMBER TWO We then scooted off to The Castle pub to play at Bradninch Festival and just made it in time. We played in the garden out the back with great acoustics, a lovely little stage and buzzy atmosphere.
It was really sunny there, so different from the hailstorm from earlier. It was like going into another world. Special thanks to Sara and Jase for making it to watch me.
The Geee' force of Jan's van when pulling away has Jase stuck to the back, holding on for dear life! :)
Again it was the first time my sis’ had ever seen me ‘do my thang’ on stage so it was really special. Fanx guys. love ya :)
Our encore song was ‘The Woodlouse song’ and yes it was about Woodlouses. I started writing it with Paul a couple of years ago as a joke and then it got buried and forgotten about under a load more lyrics. When I was jamming with Katie I stumbled across the old lyrics again and we finished writing it in fits of laughter. When we played it, I was wondering if people would get it or not and thinking oh know, what if it flops, it’s our last song, but luckily they ‘got it’ and loved it. After we finished our set, I was walking through the pub & as I passed people, I could hear them singing the chorus line. Woodlouse, woodlouse, I wish I was a woodlouse...I couldn’t believe it.
I had a guy come up to me and make me sing it again cause his mate didn’t hear it properly. As I was leaving and getting into my van ready to go to my third and final gig of the day, I had to stop and listen for a moment...There were some guys waiting for a bus across the road and they were singing it too. It was surreal and so, so funny. Will get a copy on the site soon as poss! Well done and many, many thanks to Lady Katie for making it such a fab gig. She was in a rush too, she had a wedding to get to.
GIG NUMBER THREE And lastly but not leastly' I then headed over to Sally’s for her
Mad Hatters Party gig.
Myself and Ed were playing, what was going to be a short set, that ended up going on more than twice as long. They didn’t want us to stop and I didn’t want to either. It was really mellow and I just couldn’t stop playing the guitar...(wow miracles do happen ehh!!!) Ed was doing some cool improvisation stuff on some of my tunes that he’d never heard before. I thought it sounded really wicked, like we both knew what we were doing (steady on, I know) :) but it really worked well. Thanks Ed for your confidence in just going with the songs cause I think it sounded fab with all your bits and bobs you were doing. My work was now done for the day so we half packed away the P.A. and I settled in to relaxing properly around a gorgeous little bonfire. You just can’t beat the atmosphere of good company, a roaring fire, good music and I think that’s about it, what more could you want boy!! :) oh, a beer...:) A great eve’ all round. Thanks Sally :)
It's going to be a long night so better pace ourselves Mr Cider drinker

Thu 8th May2008 The beginnings of The Jabbrock band.... I’ve started jamming and recording with a funky band called ‘Jabbrock’ their music sounds a bit similar to Leftfield & Faithless. Its got a really dance’y / Reggae stylee going on with a unique twist. I love singing with them. It’s very exciting. we’re planning to bombard the world...oops, sorry, I mean the festivals etc. next year so watch this space folks. who knows what could happen!! :)
Sat 8th Mar 2008. The Snooky trust Charity gig @ The Atmospheric, Starcross. Big thanks to Stone & Caz for asking me to play at this event. It was a fantastic evening with some great talent. Ed played guitar with me. He did a great job, played really well and just got right into it. So much energy. Cheers Ed! :)
Check out the videos on the website & www.myspace.com/marniesongs. I enjoyed it So much & met some really lovely people. Thanks to Rosey & Roger and Anne & her friends for coming to yet another gig and supporting me. loves ya!
There was a really good crowd and The Snooky trust raised about £200 so it was a good productive evening and worth all they’re hard work in organising.
Cloudy opened the evening with a great set & a good choice of songs. The only down side was that she played 3 of the same songs that we had in our set list. How dare she :) ha,ha! - must have good taste!! :) I’m told Cloudy is about 15yrs of age. I just can’t believe she plays guitar that well and delivers such amazing vocals at 15 years old....I was really impressed and inspired by her. thanks gal! Apparently Cloudy & her mum were at Sidmouth folk festival and remembered me & Ben playing in the Anchor, all those years ago. They loved my version of Zombie and after that, Cloudy started playing guitar & singing, and Zombie was the first song she ever learnt...Wow, I’m welling up! :)

I’ve been out busking with Lady Katie a few times. It has been much fun but very cold. We nearly got blown over in Exeter. It’s a hard knock life working out in the elements! :) I had to force myself to choose a shop for us to play outside of, then go in and ask them if I could give a donation to their charity box in return for using their electric socket for Katie’s little busking P.a. I felt such a donut. They were reluctant but thankfully after a minute of persuading, they said yes. Once we’d finished our busking episode, they asked us if we would come back as they really enjoyed it! That’s what I like to hear!! We had a crowd of boys asking if they could play and sing, It’s not karayucky ya know, I said!! :)
They left and came past again later and chucked us some pennies (I thought) but they were actually 3 little marbles. I have a lovely green souvenir of my first busking with Lady Katie. Aww!! :)
People were busily going about their business and we had a few peop’s stop and listen for a bit before going on their way. I felt miles away deeply engulfed in singing ‘K.T. Tunstall’s Hold on’ and when I looked up at the end, I couldn’t believe there were loads of people all stopped on the street both sides & up the hill listening to us...It was a bit of a shock but great - obviously. They all clapped, I went red and then they sort of thinned out. It was so unexpected because when busking, people don’t generally stop and clap, it’s more of a passing audience so it was strange but good yar!! :) We had a car stop in the road in front of us for a moment. They were ‘boy racers’ in a smashing :) sooped up nova or something. ( ooh how I wish I had one...he,he!) They turned up their stereo full blast, looked over and chuckled and then speedily drove off...It was quite funny really. If I’d a reacted a bit quicker, I could have chucked some pennies in their window....ha,ha !

Ed and Anne put on some great food for their guests as we played a couple of acoustic sets. It was fun but quite intense with everybody sat so close, quietly, intently listening. They were a lovely bunch of people so we soon settled into it. A really lovely evening, Thanks for inviting me.
I am working with new musicians so that I can still sing my little, big heart out and I‘ll just see where it takes me...!!

Fri 30 Nov 2007 Exeter Memorial Museum asked Paul & I back to play for their closing down party. This time they wanted a lively upbeat set, so we gave it to them. It was an early gig, we were finished by 8pm. luckily because Paul had to rush off to another gig in Tiverton, (2 gigs in 5 hours-Rock and Roll) so I chilled out at the Museum afterwards, slowly packing down and tried not to let my head get too big with such great feedback from everyone. When we were playing, it didn't seem like they were really listening all that much, but then, they were there for the Art. But afterwards I was really surprised at how many people came up and said they really enjoyed it...See, looks can be deceiving. I kept my feet on the ground and just managed to get my head out the door! :) All is well!

Fri 16th November 2007 CHARITY CONCERT @ EXETER CATHEDRAL FOR CHILDREN IN NEED. We were lucky enough to be asked by 'Kiss This' to take part in the first EVER Rock concert at Exeter Cathedral for this great cause. We started off the evening with a 45 minute set of originals and covers. And wow, Exeter Cathedral has to be the most fantastic place I have ever played in so far. It was an experience I will never ever forget. The sound-man made us sound so brill. I couldn't believe it when I first started singing, the sound echoed around the whole cathedral. It sounded unbelievable. It nearly bought tears to my eyes. To look up and around me and be playing in such a magnificent place. We were really honoured to be part of it. The lighting man brought the cathedral to life with his cleverness, lighting up all the arches etc. It was so beautiful. One of the highlights for me was when we got the whole audience singing back to us in 'play that funky music white boy' With a bit more encouragement they roared back at me and their magnified sound threw itself around the cathedral arches. wow, wow, wow!!! And I had to sing Wuthering Heights and it sounded almost haunting in there too.....Then 'The Dean' blasted his way on stage with 'wild thing' and sang his heart out with an unforgettable performance. You couldn't help but have a big smile on your face the whole way through. He had such an energy about him. Then, lastly, 'Kiss This' ("http://www.lemonrock.com/kissthis" ) came on to perform a great selection of covers. Tanya's vocals were awesome. She has got a fantastic range and the backing, by the guys sounded full and exciting and really good. Tanya has a natural onstage presence. She flows away with the music. Very inspiring to watch. They got everybody up dancing in the isles and down the front. It was really surreal to think that we were in this holy place and pounding out great tunes and everyone dancing. It was such a fun night.
The event raised over £2000 for children in need and I honestly cannot thank everyone enough for all their hard work in making this happen. There is always so much 'behind the scenes' work involved and they made it happen. Thanks guys!! I have wanted to help raise money for children in need for years and just not quite got organised in time to prepare an event. You guys made it possible and I fulfilled one of my dreams. Both myself and Paul are very lucky!!! Thank ya!!
Sat 3rd November 2007 Paul and I played at The Bridge Inn @ Topsham with the very talented multi-tasking Miss Katie of 'Loreli' (who is also the famous lady drummer from the Reoffenders) This was our 2nd performance at The Bridge (We supported Chris TT. there last year) and it was every bit as good as the last. We started off the night with a set of original material. It was a bit nerve-racking to start with because they were such an attentive audience, everyone was so quietly, intently listening to every word, you could hear a pin drop, and any mistakes...It was a great gig. After we had done our 'thang' we sat and enjoyed Loreli perform their Original collection of really fab material, also sampling the well looked after special beers that the Bridge is so well known for...This was a very inspiring evening, I spent most of it hooked into Katie's great lyrics and feeling the raw emotions that shone through in every song.
Thu 4th October 2007 we played at The Dartmouth Inn, Newton Abbot. There were only about 5 people in the pub while we were setting up. I thought oh no, tis’ going to be a quiet one. But as the evening went on and once we started, it got really busy. Lots of Paul’s work mates came down to have a listen so that must have doubled the bar takings...ha ha ha :) Thanks guys for supporting us. Ye all really made it a great night.
Tue 30th October 2007 Halloween gig at The Lansdowne, Dawlish. The night started with a Halloween themed 5 course nosh up, where we started by playing a selection of chilled out music. Once they had finished their meals we upped the tempo with a lively set. I was dressed accordingly with my witch’s outfit, forgetting the broom stick this time. I couldn't get lift off with all the music gear so had to take the van instead! :)

Sun 9th Sept 2007 finds us back at The Jolly Farmer, Newton Abbot. It was a horribly wet and windy eve’ so this time we played inside. There were a few customers that braved the weather but generally mainly only the dedicated locals and some of Paul’s local mates. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to come out because it ended up to be a really buzzy night with just the few of us. Paul was on form with his witty comments and we had a right laugh. Cheers everyone!
Thu 13th Sept’ 2007 we were back at The Marine Tavern, Dawlish. I love this venue. It is cosy, with a fantastic atmosphere, with a really friendly landlord/landlady. Those that were there really listened and enjoyed the music. It’s one of those venues where people are quiet and respectful and appreciative for the music. It’s both great and scary, cause it’s then obvious when I mess up...never mind ehh, you just gotta laugh it off :) I do it on purpose really, just to show that no-ones perfect...ha ha ha yeah right! :) I do talk rubbish sometimes :)
Fri 28th Sept 2007 We were at Brazz, Taunton. Quite a smart venue. We played a long set. Chilled out music while people were noshing down their food, then more upbeat later, trying to get them dancing round with all that food inside them :) Cheers Dave for helping us unload the gear in the rain. :)

Sun 2 Sept 2007 After a week long Tour with the Reoffenders, Paul and I played another blinding gig at The Golden Lion. St Ives. What more can I say from before. They are a really buzzy crowd who love live music and they give us great feedback singing, clapping and dancing along. It was slightly more chilled than the crazy hopping last Friday night that the Reoffenders played there. (while on Tour) That night my duties consisted of being a non shaky photo person and most importantly beer Rodey. For our Marnie gig, Heather and I swapped roles and, I say, she did a sterling job...:) Many thanks to all and the Golden Lion for a guaranteed great night!!x
Paul,Katie,John & myself got together and had a wicked little Jam at the camp site.
